What is the Best Type of Case for Transporting and Storing Gear?

Custom foam inserts, plastic carrying cases with foam

So much can happen to expensive and fragile gear while on the road. Even if you are traveling short distances, you can end up finding your gear damaged or broken. What are you doing to keep your gear safe?

Daily commuting, whether through city streets or suburban communities, is very demanding on your gear and the person carrying the stuff. Any missteps or drops could result in a tragic breaking of an expensive laptop or a camera lens. When carrying heavy gear, accidents can happen, so it is important to factor that into purchasing a custom carrying case—choosing to blow molded cases guarantees extensive protection without adding much extra weight. Metal and thick plastic cases are heavy compared to a blow molded case.

Commuting by airplane comes with a unique set of problems that should be considered when acquiring custom carrying cases. If carrying a single laptop or camera, you can keep it on your lap during the flight, but in most instances, you either have to check your luggage or store it in an overhead bin. When your gear is out of sight, it runs the risk of being banged and bumped. It is always a terrible experience when your gear is damaged, and you do not find out until you get to your destination.

Transporting gear within an office still requires adequate protection. Gear that multiple people share requires a safe and reliable place to be stored. It is also in the best interest of the equipment to have a safe means of being transported through the office: especially if multiple floors are within the office
